About Teryl  Johnson

I grew up in southern Idaho, with a short stay in Rock Springs, Wyoming. I worked as a missionary in Queensland, Australia in the late eighties. I married Shawna in 1990. We have 4 wonderful kids, all Coyotes. I did music school at Boise State University and a masters at Central Washington University. My primary instrument is (French) Horn, and I also love playing trumpet, guitars, percussion, and most other instruments. I have taught at Kittitas since the fall of 2000 and I love my job and the kids I get to work with every day.

Mission Statement

Research has shown that learning to read music and sing or play an instrument strengthens the human mind's capacity to do well in all subject areas. That is great, and there is much more. Learning to express yourself through an art such as music is good for your soul. You learn to think, evaluate, decode, and interpret and then incorporate and express what is happening in your heart to create something of beauty and value. When you play music from your heart, you find yourself in another place that is very good to be. When you hear someone playing music from his or her heart, you get to join them for a moment in their escape. This rings true in any genre of music, from Beethoven to the Beatles to Mozart to Van Halen to Tito Puente to Duke Ellington to the school band, and all points in between and beyond. The greatest promise of being a musician is that you get out of it more than you put into it (but you must put yourself into it).
